Anchorage Police Department (APD) Officers Plummer and Nix encountered Gilbreath as they drove to the APD substation at Fourth Avenue and D Street in Anchorage on November 30, 1987. Gilbreaths car was stuck in the snow in the driving lane at the intersection of D Street and Fifth Avenue and was apparently blocking traffic. It appears that Gilbreath had been stopped for some time and at one point put a rug down to aid in obtaining traction.
